With
a post Vatican II re-emergence of a monarchical and absolutist papacy, there has
been a commensurate resurgence of clericalism. This
ossified subculture which feeds off its own inherent narcissism is one of the
most enduring obstacles to reform of any kind. It is now time for the whole
Church to pause, reflect and re-embrace the express will and teaching and vision
of the Council
for all not just the few

Clergy are frustrated with what they see as
false obedience to unjust ecclesiastical regulations, forcing them to say
one thing, yet do another. Awakening from this imposed pathology, they
affirm that now is the time to speak pastoral truth to hierarchical power.
Communities, big or small, can change when
consciousness of reality is awakened, relational power is nurtured and
used for the common good.

The
hierarchy are encouraging us to read the documents of Vatican II, but say we
must interpret them in a particular way; their way.
The “right hermeneutic” that Pope Benedict has
requested be used in interpreting Vatican II documents is one where the
“conservative” aspect of every teaching must be chosen. Clearly this is not
what the bishops and the Holy Spirit wanted to be the outcome of Vatican II UK:

William Grimm made a very good point in drawing attention to the real hermeneutic of continuity, namely, the policy of the Council Fathers going back into their dioceses and episcopal conferences and

be failing our grandchildren if we allowed the fruits of Vatican II

through our lack of concern. We have a duty to make the case for the Church as it is today and for what it might become.
