Jeremiah 21-23

Jerusalem was under siege by the Chaldaeans. The Lord told Jeremiah to tell the leaders of Jerusalem to surrender.

But the leaders of Jerusalem did not obey Jeremiah's words. So the Lord got Jeremiah to say these words:

"Woe to the shepherds who allow my sheep to be scattered and killed. You have not taken care of my sheep.

Therefore I will raise up a leader who will be wise and just. He will be a good shepherd of my people."

Lord, please help our leaders to be good shepherds

Psalm 81

Ring out your joy to God our strength, shout in triumph to the God of Jacob.

Listen to the voice of the Lord:

"I am the Lord your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt.

Let there be no foreign god among you, no worship of a false god.

O that my people would heed me,
that Israel would walk in my ways.

At once I would subdue their foes.
But Israel I would feed with finest wheat and honey".

Lord, please help us to walk in your ways

Colossians 3.5-11

Kill all the bad things that trouble earthly life: fornication, impurity, evil desires, greed,  anger, bad temper, spitefulness, abusive language, dirty talk and lying

You have deleted your old self, and have downloaded a fresh copy of the divine image. That image is Christ. He must be installed in every part of your life

Jesus, take over my life. Install yourself in every part of my life

 Luke 19.28-40

When Jesus came near to Jerusalem, he sent two disciples to a nearby village to get a donkey colt which no one had ever ridden

Jesus sat on the colt and began the descent from the Mount of Olives down the hill to Jerusalem

The disciples spread their clothes on the road, and joyfully praised God for all the miracles they had seen. They cried out "Blessings on the King who comes in the name of the Lord!"

Some religious leaders told Jesus to stop the disciples from calling out. Jesus replied "If these keep silence, the stones will cry out"

Jesus, you who came in the name of the Lord, we praise and love you

A week before Valentine's day, a girl asked her boyfriend what he would give her as a Valentine's gift. The boyfriend said he can give her anything, so the girl said "I want a ring". The boyfriend said "no problem.
So along came Valentine's day and the couple were on a date. They had dinner, a movie and he sent her back home. Still no ring. It was 11pm and maybe he was hiding outside, wanting to surprise her with a ring? Nothing at all. Then the next day, she got angry at her boyfriend and asked "why didn't you give me a ring?" The boyfriend said "check your phone - I did give you a ring. You missed my call!"

Jeremiah 18-20

Some officials decided to get rid of Jeremiah. They did not want to listen to his message any more.
"Come on,", they said, "let us make a case against him."

Jeremiah prayed to God: "Lord, you know that people are plotting against me. Please help me and keep me safe."

One of the Temple priests had Jeremiah beaten and put in stocks for a day near the Temple.

Again Jeremiah prayed to God:
"You have seduced me, Lord.
You have told me to proclaim a harsh message for the people.

This has made me a laughing-stock. Being your messenger has caused me insult  all the day long.

At one stage I even thought of not speaking your message any more.
But then I felt a fire burning in my heart. I could not stop thinking of you. I just had to speak your message."

Lord,  please increase my love for you. Please give me more courage to speak your message to my family, friends and people I meet

My recording of this reading

Psalms 79-80

O God, the nations have invaded your sacred land, they have profaned your holy temple. They have made Jerusalem a heap of ruins.

We have become the taunt of our neighbours, the mockery and scorn of those who surround us.

How long, O Lord, will all this last? How long will this sorrow keep going?

Do not hold the guilt of our ancestors against us. If their guilt is somehow influencing our situation now, please give peace and healing to everyone and everything in our  history.

Let the groans of the prisoners come before you. Let your strong arm reprieve those condemned to die.

O Lord, our God, help us and save us. Let your face shine on us and we shall be saved.

Lord, please heal any problems in my family tree

Today's Gospel: Zacchaeus

Luke 19.1-9

In Jericho there was a wealthy man named Zacchaeus, a senior tax collector. He wanted to see what kind of person Jesus was

But because of his short stature he couldn't see over the crowd. So he climbed a tree

Jesus saw him up the tree and said "Zacchaeus, come down, because I will stay at your house today"

Zacchaeus hurried down and welcomed Jesus warmly. People complained "He's gone to stay at the house of an outcast"

Zacchaeus replied "Sir, I am going to give half of my property to the poor. And if I have cheated anyone, I'll pay them back fourfold"

Jesus said to him "Today salvation has come to this house"

Jesus, please help more people to want to know and love you

As the 70th Anniversaries of Hiroshima and Nagasaki approach (August 6 and August 9), many people will roll out the old line "the bombs saved a million lives and caused Japan to surrender". The more one reads of Paul Ham's excellent study, the more one realises that the above statement is far from the truth

Pages 509-513 describe the reaction of the churches to the bombings, and the start of the "spin" to avoid blame: (click to enlarge)

2 Chronics 36

All the heads of the priesthood, and the people too, added infidelity to infidelity, defiling the Temple in Jerusalem.

And so invaders burned down the Temple and destroyed Jerusalem.  Survivors were deported to Babylon.

In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, the Lord roused the spirit of Cyrus to issue a proclamation: “The Lord, the God of heaven, has ordered me to build him a Temple in Jerusalem. Whoever there is among you of all his people, let him go back to Jerusalem”

Lord, don't let us be unfaithful to you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 137

By the rivers of Babylon we sat and cried, remembering Zion. On the poplars that grew there we hung up our harps.

For it was there that they asked us, our captors, for songs. "Sing to us", they said, "one of Zion's songs".

O how could we sing the song of the Lord on alien soil? If I forget you, Jerusalem, let my right hand wither.

O let my tongue cleave to my mouth if I remember you not, Jerusalem , above all my joys.

Lord, please help  people who have been exiled from their homeland

John 3.13-17

Jesus said to the religious leader: "The Son of Man must be lifted up on a cross, as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him"

God loved the world so much, that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not be lost, but may have eternal life

For God sent his Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but so that through him the world might be saved

Jesus, only Son of God the Father, thank you for coming into this world. Please help more and more people believe in you

His letter to bishops of the English-speaking world asks them to adopt the 1998 English translation of the Mass as an officially approved version. Jeremiah 18

The Lord told Jeremiah to go to the house of the potter.

At the potter's house, Jeremiah watched the potter working.
Sometimes a vessel he was making wasn't shaped properly.

So the potter would take the clay and start again, and shape the clay into a new vessel.

Then the Lord told Jeremiah: "The House of Israel is clay, I am  the potter. I  keep on trying to form Israel into a holy nation"

Lord, you are the potter, we are the clay - the work of your hands.
Please mould us into what you want us to become.

Psalm 78 (b)

May future generations not be like our ancestors who so often were unfaithful to God.

Even though our ancestors had seen God part the sea, even though they had seen him provide food and water for them in the desert, still they went on sinning.

Yet he who is full of compassion forgave and spared them. He remembered they were only weak humans.

Eventually he brought them to the promised land, and gave a home to each of Israel's tribes.

But still they sinned by building mountain shrines and serving idols.

Then God raised up David to be their leader. God called him from looking after sheep to be the shepherd of his people.

Lord, help us not to forget all you have done for us

Luke 18.35-43

As Jesus entered Jericho, there was a blind beggar sitting by the road. People in the crowd told him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by

So he called out "Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me". Some people told him to be quiet, but he just shouted all the louder "Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me"

Jesus stopped and asked him "What do you want me to do for you?" He replied "Sir, let me see again"

Jesus said to him "Receive your sight. Your faith has saved you".
Instantly his sight returned, and he followed Jesus, praising God

Jesus, please heal my blind friend ......(name)...

But when he walked in the room to meet Queen Elizabeth, he got a big surprise. The Queen was wearing yellow. No one thinks it was an accident. Even the flowers in the vases behind her were yellow. The Queen had sent a clear message.

The day will come when the world understands that there is only one Najib, and that he leads one of most repressive, racist, and corrupt regimes in Asia. And when that day comes, then hopefully we all will be wearing yellow.

Jeremiah 15

Alas, my mother, for you gave me birth to be a man of strife and dissension for everyone.

I neither lend nor borrow, yet everyone curses me. Lord, remember how I suffer insult for your sake.

Lord, please increase my love for your word, my love for the Bible

Psalms 73-77

Sometimes when I see how bad people prosper, I wonder what's the use in trying to be good?

But then I realize that everyone someday has to pay the bill for any evil they have bought in the world.

Sometimes when I see our world  and religion in ruins, I wonder why has God abandoned us?

Then I remember that God has promised to break the power
of the wicked. He has promised to give strength to good people.

So may all people honor the Lord our God and judge. May the Lord give us his loving help.

Lord, you are goodness itself. Please help us to be good and to trust you always

Jesus replied "You know the commandments: you must not commit adultery, you must not kill, you must not steal, you must honor your father and mother"

The man answered "I have kept all these commandments all my life"

Jesus then said "There is still one higher goal: sell all  you own,
give the money to the poor, then come follow me"

But when the man heard this he was very sad, because he was very rich

Jesus, please help me follow you the way you want me to follow you

An Augustinian, a Franciscan, and a Jesuit all die and get to heaven. Jesus asks each one, "If you could go back, what would you change"?

The Augustinian ponders a while and says, "There's so much sin in the world. If I went back, I'd try and stop people from sinning so much."
The Franciscan thinks a bit and says, "There's so much poverty in the world. If I went back, I'd try and get people to share more of their wealth with the poor."
The Jesuit looks at Jesus and quickly replies, "If I went back, I'd change my doctor."

Jeremiah 12-14 (let's pray this on behalf of people being attacked by IS)

Lord, you are in our midst, we are called by your name. Please give us help and strength in this time of trouble.

Wherever I go I see sadness and despair.
Our land has been invaded by the foreign soldier.

If I go into the countryside, I see people killed by the sword.

If I go into the city,
I see people sick with hunger.

O God, you are our hope. For your name's sake, please forgive us and help us.

Lord, please help people  whose countries are under occupation by foreign soldiers

Psalm 72

O Lord, please bless the king, that he might serve your people with justice.

May the mountains bring forth peace for the people, and the hills, justice.

The kings of Sheba and Seba bring him gifts. All nations will serve him.

He will save the poor when they cry for help, and the needy who are helpless.

He will have pity on the weak, and save the lives of the poor.

May every tribe be blessed in him. May every nation bless his name.

May all the nations know and love you, Lord

Colossians 1.15-20

Christ is the image of the unseen God. In him were created all things.

All things were created through him and for him

Before anything was created, he existed.
He holds all things in unity

The Church is his body. He is its head

God wants all things to be reconciled through him who brought peace by his death on the Cross

Jesus, God the Son become man, may our world find reconciliation and peace in you

Luke 18.15-17

People brought little children to Jesus, for him to bless them. The disciples told the people to go away and not bother Jesus

But Jesus called the children to him and said "Let the children come to me, and do not stop them, for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs

I tell you, anyone who does not welcome the kingdom of God like a little child, will never enter it"

Jesus, please give all children the chance to know and love you

Chris McDonnell (Wed UK blogger)

After the Curtain came down
The Church in
Europe is facing a huge challenge. With falling congregations and a drastic fall in vocations to the priesthood, a continent framed in the spirit of Christian faith over many hundreds of years is rapidly changing. How does the Church proclaim the message of Christ in what is at best an indifferent culture and at worst one that is openly hostile to the faith that we profess?

O.M.I. Superior General, Fr Louis Lougen at 40th Anniversary Mass of Oblate Primary School yesterday, in his sermon showed everyone the cross of Oblate Founder St Eugene de Mazenod ...which is handed down to each superior general. He asked the children "can you guess who's cross this is?", hoping for someone to say "St Eugene's". But one little boy had an even better answer: "It's Jesus' cross"!
