Turkey recalls ambassador after Pope Francis names Armenian Genocide at Mass to mark its centenary

Once a week for almost two years I've been visiting a young (now 21) year old local prisoner in a local hospital ...fighting cancer. Last night he was given an official pardon, signed by HK's Chief Executive ...since he is close to death. He is now "free", but only barely alive. To the One who said "ask for anything" I say "Jesus, please let A-Gwan live and recover!"

Ezekiel 33-34

God told Ezekiel to say this to Israel's leaders:

"Punishment is coming for you shepherds who have fed yourselves but not looked after the sheep.

You have failed to make the weak sheep strong, or to care for the sick ones.

You have failed to bring back stray sheep, or look for lost sheep.

On the contrary, you have been cruel to the sheep, and treated them badly.

Therefore I will look after my flock myself. I will rescue them from where they have been scattered.

I will look for the lost one, bring back the stray, bandage the injured, and make the weak strong.

I will also judge the sheep themselves. I will judge the fat sheep which have bullied the weak sheep.

I will raise up a special shepherd
and put him in charge of all my sheep."

Lord, please help all leaders care for their people, like Jesus the Good Shepherd

Psalm 98

Sing a new song to the Lord for he has worked wonders. His right hand has brought salvation.

The Lord has made known his salvation. He has shown his justice to the nations.

He has remembered his truth and love for the house of Israel.

All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Shout to the Lord all the earth, ring out your joy.

Sing psalms to the Lord with the harp, with the sound of music.

Let the sea, the world and all peoples acclaim the King, the Lord.

Let the rivers clap their hands
and the hills ring out their joy at the presence of the Lord, for he comes to rule the earth.

He will rule the world with justice
and the peoples with fairness.

Lord, may all peoples in all countries know your love and goodness

2 Thessalonians 1.1-5

From Paul, Silvanus and Timothy to the Church in Thessalonika:
grace and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ

We take special pride in you because of your perseverance,
despite persecutions and other troubles you have to face

People who refuse to accept the Good News are facing an eternal penalty: to be excluded forever from the presence of the Lord

So we pray that God will help you be the sort of people he wants you to be. In this way our Lord Jesus Christ will be glorified in you

Jesus,  help me "keep going" when trials come

John 1.5, 19-34

John the Baptist was sent by God as a witness to the people about the presence of the Word among them

When religious leaders asked John "Who are you?", he replied "I am, as the prophet Isaiah prophesied, a voice crying out: make a straight way for the Lord"

When Jesus came to the river Jordan where John was baptizing, John said "Look, there is the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. He is far more important than I am, because he existed (as the Word) before I was born

I saw the Holy Spirit come down on him like a dove. He will baptize people with the Holy Spirit.  He is the Chosen One of God"

Jesus, lamb of God, Chosen One of God, please baptize me with the Holy Spirit

John 20.21-29 (a)

That same Sunday evening, the doors were locked in the room where the disciples had gathered, for fear of the religious leaders

But Jesus appeared and stood before them, saying "Peace be with you". He showed them his hands and his side and said "As the Father sent me, so I am sending you"

Then he breathed on them, saying "Receive the Holy Spirit"

Thomas, one of the 12 apostles, was not there that night. When the other disciples said they had seen the Lord, he replied "Unless I see and touch his wounded body, I refuse to believe"

John 20.21-29 (b)

Eight days later, the group was again in the same house, with the doors locked. This time Thomas was with them

Jesus again appeared and stood before them saying "Peace be with you". Then he said to Thomas "Put your hand into my side. Doubt no longer, but believe".  Thomas replied "My Lord and my God!"

Jesus said "You believe because you can see me. Blessed are those who have not seen me and yet believe"

Jesus, my Lord and my God, I believe in you. Help me live and grow and die in your friendship

Ezekiel 12-18

Ezekiel spoke God's message for the false prophets:

"You have misled my people. You have not bothered to protect my people".

Ezekiel also called on the people to stop their idolatry. He reminded them how to follow the Lord:

- A good person is law-abiding and honest.
- A good person oppresses no one, never steals.
- a good person gives food and clothing to the poor.

"God takes no delight in the death of a sinner. God hopes the sinner will renounce wickedness and live."

Mark 16. 9-15

Having risen in the morning on the first day of the week, Jesus appeared first to Mary of Magdala from whom he had cast out seven devils. She then went to those who had been his companions, and who were mourning and in tears, and told them. But they did not believe her when they heard her say that he was alive and that she had seen him.

After this, he showed himself under another form to two of them as they were on their way into the country. These went back and told the others, who did not believe them either.

Lastly, he showed himself to the Eleven themselves while they were at table. He reproached them for their incredulity and obstinacy, because they had refused to believe those who had seen him after he had risen. And he said to them, ‘Go out to the whole world; proclaim the Good News to all creation.

Jesus, please deepen my faith in your resurrection

Today is the 60th anniversary of Teilhard de Chardin

See item, below:
A "caterpillar/butterfly" reflection for the 60th anniversary of Teilhard de Chardin

During Easter time, Catholics use the Regina Caeli instead of the Angelus. But the RC needs improving. It's addressed to Mary as Queen of Heaven, and says to her "Cheer up, your son has risen from the dead". Mary in Heaven doesn't need cheering up. Mary near her son's tomb on Holy Saturday needs cheering up. So, instead of "Regina Caeli", a better name would be "Mother of Sorrows" ("Mater Dolores?").
And ...it's heresy to say "he whom you merited to bear".  No human being merits anything in God's sight. Everything is grace, a gift from God. Better to say "he whom you were chosen to bear".  My Latin not so great. Can someone please send me Latin for "chosen" to replace "merited" (with same number of sounds as "meruisti").

(What about all the times "merit" is used in the Liturgy?  Very, very good question! - see item, below, "Merit" and the New Translation)

Ezekiel 4-11

Ezekiel used many images to describe the fall of Jerusalem.
But the people and their leaders would not believe him.

God used Ezekiel to say to the exiles:

"I will bring you back to your homeland of Israel. I will give you a new heart and a new spirit.

Then you will keep my commandments. Then you will know that I am the Lord."

Grant to us, O Lord, a heart renewed

My recording of this reading

Psalm 95

Come ring out our joy to the Lord.
Hail the rock who saves us.

Let us come before him giving thanks. With songs let us praise the Lord.

A mighty God is the Lord, a great king above all gods.

In his hand are the depths of the earth. The heights of the mountains are his.

To him belongs the sea, for he made it, and the dry land shaped by his hands.

Come in, let us bow and bend low.
Let us kneel before the God who made us.

For he is our God, and we are the people who belong to his pasture.

Lord, you are our Creator. Our life comes from you. We praise and love you, Lord

Recording

The Lord's coming will not find us unprepared if we live a good life

You are not children of the night and of darkness. You are children of the light and of the day

Encourage one another. Strengthen one another

John 21.1-14

Jesus also appeared to the disciples at the Sea of Galilee, when Peter, John and 5 other disciples were fishing. They had spent all night in their boat, but had caught nothing

In the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, though the disciples did not recognize him. He called out "Lower your net on the right side of the boat"

Immediately the net filled with fish. John realized that the man on the shore was Jesus. John said to Peter "It is the Lord", and they returned to the shore, which was only about 100 meters away. The net had 153 big fish, but did not break

Jesus had prepared some bread. He also had some fish cooking on a charcoal fire. He said "Come and have breakfast"

Act East:  Nehru’s Lesson for Modi

"Merit" and the New Translation: - from this article

One other unsettling feature of the revised prayers of the Mass is their recurring reliance on merit theology and the entirely unattractive language of profit and loss. What image of God is being conveyed through such language? One image that springs to mind is the book-keeper God of former times, keeping a divine tally of our virtues and vices. Is this the kind of image we want to foster in our relationship with the God of Jesus? Is this really the kind of relationship we gather to celebrate at the Eucharist? It seems to me that this recurring reliance on the notion of merit, has as much place in our relationship with the Lord, as within our closest and most intimate human relationships, which I would suggest is hardly any place at all

A reflection for the 60th anniversary of Teilhard de Chardin

We are like caterpillars.....there's a higher form of life around the corner......we are on the way to becoming....butterflies:

When the universe began....when life began.....there were molecules and atoms......then there were animals.....then there were human beings.  Only human beings can be aware of their thinking, can "know that they know", can "reflect as they think".  This consciousness is a process that has been developing since the start of the universe ....and has not yet finished.  Evolution, according to Teilhard, demands a Super-Consciousness, a Super-Life, somewhere in the future.

In the Bible and especially in Greek/Eastern Christianity, there is the theme of human beings sharing in the life of God, sharing the divine life, partially now, fully in Heaven. This is a process of "becoming like God, sharing God's divinity, "divinisation".

Super-Consciousness + divinisation = thinking more and more like Jesus, like God, with an ever greater kind of consciousness, until we become what we think = becoming more and more aware/conscious of Jesus/God in our daily lives (every conversation, every activity) until it is no longer we who are thinking but Jesus/God thinking in us = we are transformed/transfigured/divinised.  Not that we lose our own identity, but that our identity, our consciousness has been raised to a new/Super level......just as "thinking"/consciousness has been raised to newer levels (plant/animal/human) since the universe began.

We are meant to become....Divine butterflies.....

Yesterday at a men's detention centre I had the unpleasant job of letting an overseas inmate know that his girlfriend also was in detention. She had told me to tell him she was in detention and to tell him the reason. So when he asked "why?" I used the HK common term "soliciting" which he couldn't understand. So I tried "prostitution", but he still couldn't understand (speaks only a tiny bit of English). Then another inmate, a friend of his helping with translation, got the message across very simply and starkly by using a word ending in "-ing" and starting with "f"!

Ezekiel 1-3

About 5 years after the first group of Jews were exiled to Babylon,
Ezekiel received a vision while he was with the exiles in Babylon.

Ezekiel saw the glory of the Lord and he heard a voice saying: "I am choosing you to speak my message to the people.

Whether the people listen to you or not, you must keep on proclaiming my message.

You are to be a sentry to the House of Israel, a lookout who warns them of danger coming."

Lord, please help people listen to your message and obey it

O Lord,  Judge of the earth,
how long will the wicked crush the poor?

The wicked say "God does not hear". But can he who made the ear, not hear?

When cares increase in my heart,

Luke 24.36-49 (a)

The disciples were still talking about what had happened when suddenly Jesus himself stood among them. At first they were terrified and thought they were seeing a ghost

But he said "Look at my hands and feet. Yes, it is I indeed. Touch me and see for yourselves. A ghost has no flesh and bones as you can see I have"

Their fear turned to joy but they still couldn't believe what they were seeing. So he asked them for something to eat, and they gave him some grilled fish which he ate in front of them

Soon I will send down to you what the Father promised (the Holy Spirit).  Stay in Jerusalem until you are clothed with this power from on high"

China to test Tibetan monks and nuns for patriotism

Last week I finished reading this encouraging book, available from Claretian Publications Macao  (bible@claret.org)

One key idea:  if the Catholic Church wants to improve its relationship with China, the Church needs to do something about two problems:

1. At the top level it needs to speak with one voice. Presently Beijing is hearing a wide range of voices .... from outspoken people (like HK's Cardinal Zen) to "doves" at the Vatican trying to make peace

2. At the ground level in China, the Catholic Church needs to heal the division between "official" and "unofficial" groups. There needs to be much more charity, forgiveness and healing of divisions

In other words, the Catholic Church is fractured at top and bottom ....making it difficult for Beijing to know who to deal with. If the Church was united on the ground in China, and at the top level, negotiations with Beijing would be much easier.

“So many people come to church with a genuine desire to hear what we have to say, yet they are always going back home with the uncomfortable feeling that we are making it too difficult for them to come to Jesus.” - DB

Baruch 6

Because of your sins, you will be exiles in Babylon for seven  generations.

In Babylon  when you  see all sorts of idols being worshipped by the local people, say in your hearts:
"Master, it is you  we must worship."

Lord, when we are in places where people are worshipping idols,
please help us remember to pray in our hearts: "Master, it is you we  worship"

Psalm 93

The Lord is king, with majesty enrobed, he has girded himself with power.

The world you made firm, not to be moved. From all eternity, O Lord, you are.

The oceans and coastlines of the world are majestic and powerful.

But greater than the roar of mighty waters, more glorious than the surging of the sea is the Lord on high.

Such a Lord, such a Creator, such a God. Truly your decrees are to be trusted.

Holiness is fitting to your house
O Lord, always and everywhere.

We praise you, Lord, our Creator

Luke 24.13-35 (a)

That same day, two of Jesus' disciples were on their way from Jerusalem to the village of Emmaus, about seven km from Jerusalem

As they talked about all that had happened, Jesus himself joined them as they walked along. But they did not recognize him

When Jesus asked them what they were talking about, they said "About Jesus of Nazareth,  and how our leaders had him crucified. And how some women in our group went to Jesus' tomb and were told by angels that he was alive"

Jesus then explained the Scripture passages which predicted his suffering and resurrection

Recording

Luke 24.13-35 (b)

Jesus joined the two men for an evening meal. During the meal,
he blessed  some bread and gave it to them. They then recognized him. But he immediately vanished from their sight

They said to each other "Did not our hearts burn within us as he talked to us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?"

Straight away they returned to Jerusalem where the eleven apostles said to them "Yes, it is true. The Lord has risen"

Then they told their story of what had happened on the road, and how they had recognized Jesus at the breaking of bread

Jesus, please make my heart burn within me as I read the Bible

April come she will
We have to learn to accommodate different points of view, to be tolerant when it would be easier to be otherwise. April to September is a short time in song lyrics but a much longer time considered as a life experience
