    "Same-sex marriage"

On the menu of May 30 and May 31 (below) I lamented the fact that so many Catholic websites are supporting "same-sex marriage". To the list of sites can be added Eureka Street (Australia). Note the cartoon at this pro "same-sex marriage" article. Also note some of the comments ...I'm not the only lamenter.
e.g. comment by Ross Howard (May 29):

"In Massachusetts, California and Ontario, education policy now mandates teaching the homosexual agenda to kids. The Australian Education Union too is ready, having adopted a ‘gender identity’ education policy back in 2006. .....The goal is to eliminate real Christian values"

e.g. comment by Marg (May 29):

"Did it cross your mind, John Warhurst, that what scripture says on this issue should play some part of what a purportedly Christian person decides? Or do we just go with the flow because the flow must be right?"

On this day in 2001 Dr Kenneth McAll went home to Heaven.

What he had learnt in China about healing, he took back to the UK - and helped thousands of people for whom ordinary medicine ...and ordinary prayers ...could not help. Whereas normally 15-30 per cent of anorexics die, 84 per cent of those he treated were cured.
Some of his experiences might seem incredible, and some people make fun of him. But for me I just wish I'd known about his book (Healing the Family Tree) earlier in my ministry ...I could have helped more people.

Genesis 28

When Rebecca sent Jacob to Haran, she and Isaac told Jacob to find a wife in Haran.

While Jacob was on his way to Haran, God appeared to him in a dream and said to him "I will keep you safe wherever you go, and I'll bring you back safely to your own land."

Dear God, please keep us safe wherever we go

Psalm 146

My soul, give praise to the Lord.
I will praise the Lord all my days.

Put no trust in princes, in mortal men in whom there is no help.

Take their breath, they return to clay, and their plans that day come to nothing.

They are happy who are helped by Jacob's God, whose hope is in the Lord our God, who alone made heaven and earth, the seas and all they contain.

It is he who gives bread to the hungry, the Lord, who sets prisoners free.

It is the Lord who gives sight to the blind, who raises up those who are bowed down.

It is the Lord who protects the stranger, and upholds the widow and orphan.

It is the Lord who loves the just, but thwarts the path of the wicked.

The Lord will reign for ever, Zion's God, from age to age.

Lord, please increase my trust and faith in you

Hebrews 7.1-28

Melchizedek was king of Salem and a priest of God. He blessed  Abraham.  Abraham gave Melchizedek 10% of all he had

Melchizedek's priesthood  continued down the ages in people dedicated to the service of God. It reached its perfection in the Son of God, the Eternal High Priest

The Son of God, our Lord, did not come from the priestly tribe of Levi. Everyone knows he came from the tribe of Judah

This is because he established a new priesthood, coming not from Levi, but from Melchizedek. This is why the prophecy was made of him "You are a priest of the order of Melchizedek, for ever"

Jesus' priestly power to save us is utterly certain, since he is living for ever to intercede for all who come to God through him

Jesus, Eternal High Priest, please help all pastors and priests be more like you every day

 Matthew 3.1-17

About 30 years after Jesus was born, a man began preaching repentance, and baptizing people in the river Jordan.

This man was John the Baptist.
His message was "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand".

John fulfilled the prophecy: "A voice cries in the wilderness: prepare a way for the Lord".

John said "I baptize you with water, but one is coming who will baptize you with the Holy Spirit".

Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John.
After Jesus was baptized, the heavens opened, and Jesus saw the Spirit of God coming down on him like a dove.

And a voice from heaven said
"This is my Son, the Beloved.
My favor rests on him".

Jesus, please help me to prepare your way, like John the Baptist

"Over the top" - the love in Jesus' heart   The more we remember Jesus' love, the more we become aware that every one of us has benefited from his over the top love: by protecting us, by rescuing us, by healing us ....from scum situations

"Same-sex marriage"

Many articles about the recent referendum in Ireland point out how voters were influenced by two prominent Catholic women (one a former president, the other a media personality) who spoke in favor of "same-sex marriage".

Which suggests that in other countries where the "SSM" debate is going on, the Church might be better served by encouraging prominent lay Christians to speak up for family life ...rather than letting the bishops do the speaking (...especially in places where the Church is in shame mode because of child abuse)

Today is the anniversary of someone most Catholics have never heard of: Watchman Nee, who died on this day in 1972 in a Shanghai prison.

This article I wrote tries to show that Nee's life and teachings hold many valuable lessons for Christianity in all parts of the world

Genesis 26-27

God blessed and protected Isaac all his life.

When Isaac grew old and was nearly blind, he followed the usual custom  of giving his final blessing to his sons.

He wanted to bless Esau first,
since Esau was his older son. But Rebecca and Jacob tricked Isaac.

Jacob dressed in  Esau's clothes
and put hairy animal skins on his arms.

Before Esau came home, Jacob asked for Isaac's blessing.

Isaac said "Your voice is that of Jacob, but your arms and scent are those of Esau. Are you really Esau?"

Jacob said "I am." Isaac then gave him his solemn blessing.

When Esau found out what had happened, he was very angry and planned to kill Jacob.

So Rebecca got Jacob to go to Haran until Esau's anger cooled down.

Dear God, please bless everyone in my family

Psalm 145

I will give you glory, O God my king. I will bless your name day after day.

The Lord is great, worthy of all praise. His greatness cannot be measured.

Age to age shall proclaim your works, shall speak of your splendor and glory.

The Lord is kind and full of compassion, slow to anger, abounding in love.

How good is the Lord to all,
compassionate to all his creatures.

All your creatures shall thank you, O Lord, and tell all the world of your love.

The Lord is faithful in all his words, and loving in all his deeds.

The Lord supports all who fall,
and raises all who are bowed down.

The eyes of all creatures look to you, and you give them their food each day.

The Lord is close to all who call him, who call on him from their hearts.

Let the whole world bless the Lord's holy name, for ever, for ages unending.

The Joy of the Gospel

7. Sometimes we are tempted to find excuses and complain, acting as if we could only be happy if a thousand conditions were met. To some extent this is because our “technological society has succeeded in multiplying occasions of pleasure, yet has found it very difficult to engender joy”. I can say that the most beautiful and natural expressions of joy which I have seen in my life were in poor people who had little to hold on to. I also think of the real joy shown by others who, even amid pressing professional obligations, were able to preserve, in detachment and simplicity, a heart full of faith. In their own way, all these instances of joy flow from the infinite love of God, who has revealed himself to us in Jesus Christ.

I have mixed feelings about the article below re the Irish referendum on " same-sex marriage". Overall, the article is favorable to " same-sex marriage" .... and this is the worry. The article is in one of the world's most respected Catholic magazines, The Tablet. But the implications of " same-sex marriage" are mind-boggling ...see especially page 13 of this letter by the Australian bishops. Same-sex marriage is an attack on the foundation stone of society: the family. Yet so many Catholic magazines and websites are now supporting such an attack (see menu of May 30, below). Lord, have mercy!

Deuteronomy 2-4

Moses continued his talk to the Israelites: "God has been with us these 40 years, watching over us and providing for us.

God gave us many victories, and continually told us not to be afraid of any enemies.

So now, Israel, do not forget God's goodness and help and laws.

Do not forget the things your eyes have seen. Make sure to tell these things to your children's children.

God has brought you out of Egypt to be his special people.

If you seek God with all your heart and soul, you will find him.

Understand this today, therefore, and take it to heart: The Lord is God indeed, in heaven above as on earth below, he and no other.

Keep his laws and commandments as I give them to you today, so that you and your children may prosper and live long in the land that the Lord your God gives you forever

The Joy of the Gospel

6. There are Christians whose lives seem like Lent without Easter. I realize of course that joy is not expressed the same way at all times in life, especially at moments of great difficulty.  I understand the grief of people who have to endure great suffering, yet slowly but surely we all have to let the joy of faith slowly revive as a quiet yet firm trust, even amid the greatest distress: “My soul is bereft of peace; I have forgotten what happiness is… But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: the steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness… It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord” (Lam 3:17, 21-23, 26).

The Holy Trinity decide to go on a vacation. The Son proposes to go to San Francisco, but the Father finds that place too liberal minded. So the Father proposes to go to Jerusalem. “I can’t go on vacation there!” says the Son, “That’s where I got killed!"
The Holy Spirit remains quiet ..allowing the Father and Son to decide on a place.
Finally the Father and the Son say they want to go to Rome.
“Rome?” says the Holy Spirit, “Great idea! I’ve never been there!”

I wonder why?

This article in America Magazine Same-Sex Marriage Goes to a Popular Vote in Ireland has published my comment. But other Catholic sites UCANews ("Asia's most trusted independent Catholic news source"???), the Association of Catholic Priests (Ireland) and Crux (USA) would not publish the same comment.

Notice how America does not, like National Catholic Reporter, espouse a pro-gay policy. Notice also how pro-gay articles are increasingly more frequent on the three other sites.

Question: what's driving the pro-gay stance of so many Catholic websites?  I guess there's little chance the same sites will publish the Australian bishops letters on "same-sex marriage".  This is a worrying type of censorship.

Pope  Francis:  Full text
The Joy of the Gospel

5. The Gospel constantly invites us to rejoice. A few examples will suffice. “Rejoice!” is the angel’s greeting to Mary (Lk 1:28). Mary’s visit to Elizabeth makes John leap for joy in his mother’s womb (cf. Lk 1:41). In her song of praise, Mary proclaims: “My spirit rejoices in God my Saviour” (Lk 1:47). When Jesus begins his ministry, John cries out: “For this reason, my joy has been fulfilled” (Jn 3:29). Jesus himself “rejoiced in the Holy Spirit” (Lk 10:21). His message brings us joy: “I have said these things to you, so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete” (Jn 15:11).

Our Christian joy drinks of the wellspring of his brimming heart. He promises his disciples: “You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy” (Jn 16:20). He then goes on to say: “But I will see you again and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you” (Jn 16:22). The disciples “rejoiced” (Jn 20:20) at the sight of the risen Christ. In the Acts of the Apostles we read that the first Christians “ate their food with glad and generous hearts” (2:46). Wherever the disciples went, “there was great joy” (8:8); even amid persecution they continued to be “filled with joy” (13:52). The newly baptized eunuch “went on his way rejoicing” (8:39), while Paul’s jailer “and his entire household rejoiced that he had become a believer in God” (16:34).

Why should we not also enter into this great stream of joy?

Genesis 23-24 (a)

Not long after his wife Sarah died,
Abraham told his number one servant to go back to Haran, and find a wife for his son Isaac.

The servant went to Haran, to the town of Nahor.

When women were getting water from the well in Nahor, the servant prayed to God for help to find a wife for Isaac.

He said to God,  "If I ask a woman for a drink and she answers 'Please take some of my water, and I'll give some to your camels, too'  may she be the one you have chosen for Isaac."

My recording of this reading

Genesis 23-24 (b)

He had barely finished his prayer
when Rebecca, daughter of Bethuel came to the well.

She was very beautiful and not married.

The servant asked her for water  and she said "Drink, sir...and I'll get water for your camels, too."

Bethuel, a relative of Abraham,
gladly agreed for Rebecca to go with the servant to be Isaac's wife.

Hebrews 3.1-13

Focus on Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our religion.

He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just like Moses

Take care not to turn away from the living God.

Keep encouraging one another, so that sin does not cause you to turn away from God

Jesus, help me stay focused on you

John 17.4-21

Jesus prayed: "Father, I have glorified you on earth, and finished the work you gave me to do. Now, Father, it is time for you to glorify me with the glory I had with you before the world existed

Protect those you have given me. Protect them from Satan. Consecrate them in the truth

As you sent me into the world, so I am sending them into the world.

May all my followers be united, so that the world will believe it was you who sent me"

The Joy of the Gospel

4: Zechariah, looking to the day of the Lord, invites the people to acclaim the king who comes “humble and riding on a donkey”: “Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter Jerusalem! Lo, your king comes to you; triumphant and victorious is he” (9:9).

Perhaps the most exciting invitation is that of the prophet Zephaniah, who presents God with his people in the midst of a celebration overflowing with the joy of salvation. I find it thrilling to reread this text: “The Lord, your God is in your midst, a warrior who gives you the victory; he will rejoice over you with gladness, he will renew you in his love; he will exult over you with loud singing, as on a day of festival” (3:17).

This is the joy which we experience daily, amid the little things of life, as a response to the loving invitation of God our Father: “My child, treat yourself well, according to your means… Do not deprive yourself of the day’s enjoyment” (Sir 14:11, 14). What tender paternal love echoes in these words!

2005-05-29 CAS promotion to Xinqing, about one hour from Zhaoqing

After a long, dry sermon, the minister announced he wished to meet with the church board following the close of the service. However, the first man to arrive was a total stranger. "You misunderstood my announcement. This is a meeting of the board," said the minister. "I know," said the man, "but if there is anyone here more bored than I am, I'd like to meet him!"

Can Pope Francis succeed in reforming the Curia? (Robert Mickens)
Recently, some Catholics have begun to wonder whether the 78-year-old pope has the time, energy and necessary support to radically overhaul the church's central bureaucracy.

Genesis 22

Abraham loved God very dearly.

Once when God put him to the test
Abraham was even willing to sacrifice his only son Isaac if that was what God wanted.

When God saw Abraham's love and obedience, God renewed his promise to make Abraham and Isaac's descendants as many as the stars of heaven

Dear God, please help us love and obey you

My recording of this reading

Psalms 140-143

Lord, save me from people who do evil,
you who do justice for the needy.

I have no way out of this situation. And no one wants to help me.

Lord, I beg you tonight to make haste and give me an answer, for my spirit fails within me.

In the morning let me know your love
for I put my trust in you.

Lord, please help people who are in big trouble

Hebrews 2.14-18

The Son did not become an angel. He became a man, so that he could die for us

By his death he took away the power of the devil

He himself experienced temptation.
He is able to help us when we are tempted

Jesus, please help me when I am tempted to do something wrong

John 17.1-3

After saying many things to his disciples at the meal, Jesus looked up to heaven and prayed "Father, my time has come. Give eternal life to everyone you have entrusted to me

Eternal life is this: to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent"

Father, give eternal life to all near and dear to me

Vatican says Ireland gay marriage vote is 'defeat for Christian principles, a defeat for humanity'

c.f. Romans 1.26-32:
"
Refusing to honor the Creator is why people's behaviour went bad: why women turned from natural intercourse to unnatural practices, and why men gave up natural intercourse to be consumed with passion for each other, men doing shameless things with men, and getting an appropriate reward for their perversion. Since people refused to honor God, they have dishonored themselves"

The Joy of the Gospel

4. The books of the Old Testament predicted that the joy of salvation would abound in messianic times. The prophet Isaiah exultantly salutes the awaited Messiah: exhorts those who dwell on Zion to go forth to meet him with song: “Shout aloud and sing for joy!” (12:6). The prophet tells those who have already seen him from afar to bring the message to others: “Get you up to a high mountain, O herald of good tidings to Zion; lift up your voice with strength, O herald of good tidings to Jerusalem” (40:9). All creation shares in the joy of salvation: “Sing for joy, O heavens, and exult, O earth! Break forth, O mountains, into singing! For the Lord has comforted his people, and will have compassion on his suffering ones” (49:13).

2005-05-28 A meal with the poor at Marco Polo Centre...hopefully the first of many such Saturday nights

At the conclusion of the sermon, the worshipers filed out of the sanctuary to greet the minister. As one of them left, he shook the minister's hand, thanked him for the sermon and said, "Thanks for the message, Reverend. You know, you must be smarter than Einstein." Beaming with pride, the minister said, "Why, thank you, brother!"

As the week went by, the minister began to think about the man's compliment. The more he thought, the more he became baffled as to why anyone would deem him smarter than Einstein. So he decided to ask the man the following Sunday.

The next Sunday he asked the parishioner if he remembered the previous Sunday's comment about the sermon. The parishioner replied that he did. The minister asked: "Exactly what did you mean that I must be smarter than Einstein?"

The man replied, "Well, Reverend, they say that Einstein was so smart that only ten people in the entire world could understand him. But Reverend, no one can understand you."

Genesis 20-21

Abraham and his wife Sarah were old people, but God blessed them with a son. They named their son Isaac.

Sarah again made life difficult for Hagar and Hagar's son.

Hagar and her son had to leave Abraham's home, but God protected them and found them a new home.

Dear God, please don't let me make life difficult for anyone else

Psalm 139

O Lord, you search me and you know me. You know my resting and my rising.

You know exactly what's going on in my life, all my ways are an open book to you.

Before ever a word is on my tongue, you know, O Lord, what I'm going to say.

Your knowledge is beyond my understanding, too high, beyond my reach.

It was you who created my being,
knit me together in my mother's womb.

I thank you for the wonder of my life, for the wonders of all your creation.

Lord, thank you for the gift of life. Please help me follow the path to eternal life

Hebrews 1-4

At various times in the past and in various different ways, God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets

But in our own time, he has spoken to us through his Son,
through whom he made everything.

He is the radiant light of God the Father's glory

He has sacrificed himself for sinners. He has taken his place at the right hand of the Father. He is far greater than any angel

John 16.7-33

Jesus said to his disciples at the meal "I will leave you soon. After I go, I will send the New Friend to you. The New Friend will teach you all about right and wrong. The New Friend will help you know the truth about everything

You are sad now because I am leaving you. But I will see you again, and your hearts will be full of joy. No one will be able to take that joy from you

I have told you all these things so that you may find peace in me. In the world you will have trouble, but be brave: I have conquered the world

Jesus, thank you for your peace, your joy, and your Holy Spirit

3. I invite all Christians to a renewed personal encounter with Jesus Christ.  I ask all of you to do this unfailingly each day. No one should think that this invitation is not meant for him or her, since “no one is excluded from the joy brought by the Lord”. The Lord does not disappoint those who take this risk; whenever we take a step towards Jesus, we come to realize that he is already there, waiting for us with open arms
