Imitating Pope Francis

"The earth is our common home and all of us are brothers and sisters"
 - sounds like Laudato Si, but is actually The Joy of the Gospel 183, below

Tuesday December 15               Non-stop solo piano Christmas music - beautiful!

Yesterday I made the long trip to Lantau Island to Shek Pik and Tong Fuk prisons - to visit Kenyan and Ugandan inmates whose families I hope to visit in January. Also visited many Tanzanian inmates - who are over the moon that new President John Magafuli is doing such a good job. Now I understand a little better that in Africa it's the candidates rather than the parties which are important!

Pope's letter on climate change:
Laudato Si
     我主應受讚美

155 (a): Human ecology also implies another profound reality: the relationship between human life and the moral law, which is inscribed in our nature and is necessary for the creation of a more dignified environment.

Pope Benedict XVI spoke of an “ecology of man”, based on the fact that “man too has a nature that he must respect and that he cannot manipulate at will”.[120] It is enough to recognize that our body itself establishes us in a direct relationship with the environment and with other living beings.

The acceptance of our bodies as God’s gift is vital for welcoming and accepting the entire world as a gift from the Father and our common home, whereas thinking that we enjoy absolute power over our own bodies turns, often subtly, into thinking that we enjoy absolute power over creation.

In a book published in 2005, Muslim extremists outlined their twenty-year plan. Phase Five of the plan, 2013-2016, called for the setting up of a caliphate.

Phase six of the plan, 2016-2019, calls for total confrontation, for non-stop conflict with the non-Muslim world. This is why IS has issued a call for recruits in China. This is why it has asked its members to go back to their own nations and cause havoc

1 Samuel 7

The Sacred Chest was taken from the town of Beth-shemesh to the town of Kiriath-jearim, to the house of Abinadab, whose son Eleazar was consecrated to guard the Chest.

After 20 more years, the Israelites again longed for freedom from the Philistines.

Samuel gathered all the Israelites at Mizpah, where after prayer,
battle was joined with the Philistines who were defeated.

The Philistines no longer came into Israelite territory.

Samuel was judge over all Israel for the rest of his life. During Samuel's time, the Philistines no longer troubled Israel. There was peace also between Israel and the Amorites.

Each year Samuel went on circuit around the country to judge cases of law.

He would then return to his home town of Ramah and continue his work as a judge from there.

Dear God, please give the world more leaders like Samuel

Psalm 40

I waited, I waited for the Lord and he stooped down to me. He heard my cry.

He saved me from distress. He put fresh hope into my heart.

How many, O Lord my God, are the times you have helped me. They are too many for me to describe.

My God, in the depth of my heart I delight in your law. You do not want external offerings. You want my heart.

Lord, I offer you my heart, my love. You deserve all my love

Acts 27.21-37

Paul then spoke to everyone: Don't despair. There will be no loss of life. Last night an angel of God said to me: "Do not be afraid, Paul. You are destined to go to Rome. Therefore God grants you the safety of all who are sailing with you"

On the 14th day, Paul took some bread, gave thanks to God in front of them all, broke it and  gave it to everyone to eat. This gave them courage. There were 276 of them on the ship

Jesus, thank you for the courage that Communion gives us

Recording

 Luke 6.46-49

In his teaching, Jesus said "Why do you call me 'Lord', yet do not do what I ask you to do?

Anyone who comes to me and listens to my words and puts them into practice is like a man who built his house on a solid foundation. That house was so well built that even floods could not damage it

But anyone who listens and does not put my words into practice is like a man who built his house without a foundation. As soon as floods came, the house collapsed"

Jesus, please help me put your words into practice; help me apply them in my daily life

If indeed “the just ordering of society and of the state is a central responsibility of politics”, the Church “cannot and must not remain on the sidelines in the fight for justice”.

154.
Respect for our dignity as human beings often jars with the chaotic realities that people have to endure in city life.

Yet this should not make us overlook the abandonment and neglect also experienced by some rural populations which lack access to essential services and where some workers are reduced to conditions of servitude, without rights or even the hope of a more dignified life.

One word almost unravelled the Paris climate deal

The Sacred Chest of the Lord was in Philistine territory for 7 months.

Then the Philistines put the Chest on a cart pulled by 2 milch cows.

The cows went straight to the Israelite town of Beth-shemesh,

The people of Beth-shemesh were overjoyed to see the Sacred Chest.

O Lord, please forgive my sins and heal me. Heal my body which is sick because of my sins.

Protect me, Lord, from those who gloat over me now that I am brought low and unable to help myself.

Acts 27.9-20

Navigation at that time of the year was dangerous, since winter was starting. But the ship's captain set sail hoping to reach Phoenix, a harbor in Crete

Suddenly a fierce storm began and the ship could not be turned head-on to the wind. We had to let ourselves be driven by the wind

The ship was badly damaged by the storm. On the second day, the cargo was dumped overboard

For several days both sun stars were invisible as  the storm raged.  We lost all hope of surviving

Thirty years ago today: my first ever trip to China, a one-day journey across the border to Shenzhen in 1985, with then vicar-general of the Oblate Congregation, Fr Francis George O.M.I. (later Cardinal of Chicago)

While taking a routine vandalism report at an elementary school, I was interrupted by a little girl about 6 years old. Looking up and down at my uniform, she asked, 'Are you a cop? Yes,' I answered and continued writing the report. "My mother said if I ever needed help I should ask the police. Is that right?' 'Yes, that's right,' I told her. 'Well, then,' she said as she extended her foot toward me, 'would you please tie my shoe?'

Pope's letter on climate change:

153. The quality of life in cities has much to do with systems of transport, which are often a source of much suffering for those who use them.

Many cars, used by one or more people, circulate in cities, causing traffic congestion, raising the level of pollution, and consuming enormous quantities of non-renewable energy. This makes it necessary to build more roads and parking areas which spoil the urban landscape.

Many specialists agree on the need to give priority to public transportation. Yet some measures needed will not prove easily acceptable to society unless substantial improvements are made in the systems themselves, which in many cities force people to put up with undignified conditions due to crowding, inconvenience, infrequent service and lack of safety.

In a couple of weeks I'm due to go for my annual holiday - which once again will be spent in Africa DV, in Kenya (with a brief trip to Uganda if practical). Same aims as last January in Tanzania

I've sent out forms to inmates from Kenya and Uganda, asking them for contact info if they'd like me to visit their families. About 20 replies so far. Before Christmas I'll try to visit these 20 inmates.

I'm following in the footsteps of Pope Francis, but I'll take a rain-check on the Central African Republic!

Zephaniah 3.14-18

Shout for joy, daughter of Zion, Israel, shout aloud! Rejoice, exult with all your heart, daughter of Jerusalem!

The Lord has repealed your sentence; he has driven your enemies away.

The Lord, the king of Israel, is in your midst; you have no more evil to fear.

When that day comes, word will come to Jerusalem: Zion, have no fear, do not let your hands fall limp.

The Lord your God is in your midst, a victorious warrior.

He will exult with joy over you, he will renew you by his love; he will dance with shouts of joy for you as on a day of festival.

Make his mighty deeds known to the peoples! Declare the greatness of his name.

Sing a psalm to the Lord for he has done glorious deeds; make them known to all the earth!

Laudato Si

152. Lack of housing is a grave problem in many parts of the world, both in rural areas and in large cities, since state budgets usually cover only a small portion of the demand.

Not only the poor, but many other members of society as well, find it difficult to own a home. Having a home has much to do with a sense of personal dignity and the growth of families.

This is a major issue for human ecology. In some places, where makeshift shanty towns have sprung up, this will mean developing those neighbourhoods rather than razing or displacing them.

When the poor live in unsanitary slums or in dangerous tenements, “in cases where it is necessary to relocate them, in order not to heap suffering upon suffering, adequate information needs to be given beforehand, with choices of decent housing offered, and the people directly involved must be part of the process”.[118]

At the same time, creativity should be shown in integrating rundown neighbourhoods into a welcoming city: “How beautiful those cities which overcome paralyzing mistrust, integrate those who are different and make this very integration a new factor of development! How attractive are those cities which, even in their architectural design, are full of spaces which connect, relate and favour the recognition of others!”[119]

 BBC
: Road to War - ITALY

From this program I learnt that after sacrificing 500,000 soldiers in WWI, Italy (like Germany and China) was treated badly by the Treaty of Versailles ...and that Mussolini (like Hitler) filled a political vacuum associated with the Depression after WWI.

This program and others in the series (GB, Germany, Japan, US) show how Britain and France's harshness at the ToV was a major cause of WWII, a mistake the US avoided in its compassionate treatment of Japan at end of WWII

1 Samuel 5

The Philistines took the captured Sacred Chest to the shrine of Dagon in one of their towns.

Next morning, they found the statue of Dagon on its face on the ground, in front of the Sacred Chest.

They picked Dagon up and put him back in his place. But next morning he was down again, with his head and hands cut off from the rest of his body.

While the Sacred Chest was in the Philistine town, the people there were struck with tumors and many people died.

The people told their leaders to take the Sacred Chest back to Israel where it belonged.

182.
The Church’s teachings concerning contingent situations are subject to new and further developments and can be open to discussion, yet we cannot help but be concrete – without presuming to enter into details – lest the great social principles remain mere generalities which challenge no one.

There is a need to draw practical conclusions, so that they “will have greater impact on the complexities of current situations”.

The Church’s pastors, taking into account the contributions of the different sciences, have the right to offer opinions on all that affects people’s lives, since the task of evangelization implies and demands the integral promotion of each human being.

It is no longer possible to claim that religion should be restricted to the private sphere and that it exists only to prepare souls for heaven. We know that God wants his children to be happy in this world too, even though they are called to fulfilment in eternity, for he has created all things “for our enjoyment”, the enjoyment of everyone.

It follows that Christian conversion demands reviewing especially those areas and aspects of life “related to the social order and the pursuit of the common good”.

151. There is also a need to protect those common areas, visual landmarks and urban landscapes which increase our sense of belonging, of rootedness, of “feeling at home” within a city which includes us and brings us together.

It is important that the different parts of a city be well integrated and that those who live there have a sense of the whole, rather than being confined to one neighbourhood and failing to see the larger city as space which they share with others.

Interventions which affect the urban or rural landscape should take into account how various elements combine to form a whole which is perceived by its inhabitants as a coherent and meaningful framework for their lives. Others will then no longer be seen as strangers, but as part of a “we” which all of us are working to create. For this same reason, in both urban and rural settings, it is helpful to set aside some places which can be preserved and protected from constant changes brought by human intervention.

Around this time, the Philistines defeated the Israelites in a battle.

The Israelites then went to Shiloh
and took the Sacred Chest of the Lord.

They took the Sacred Chest into battle with them, but the Chest was captured by the Philistines.

In the same battle, Eli's two sons were killed.

After two years, Felix was succeeded by Festus. Festus arranged a new trial for Paul

The religious leaders repeated their accusations. Paul repeated his innocence

Festus wanted to gain favor with the leaders so he said to Paul "Are you willing to go to Jerusalem for a trial with the full council of religious leaders, at which I would preside?"

Paul knew his rights, and stood his ground, not wanting to go to a kangaroo court in Jerusalem. So he invoked his right as a Roman citizen: "I appeal to Caesar"

But alas for you who are rich: your consolation is only in this world. Alas for you who have plenty to eat: you shall go hungry.
Alas for you who laugh now: you shall mourn and weep"

Jesus, please help me to give more time and importance to the things that really matter

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel      Full text

181 (b): Our mandate is to “go into all the world and proclaim the good news to the whole creation”, for “the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the children of God”.

Here, “the creation” refers to every aspect of human life; consequently, “the mission of proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ has a universal destination. Its mandate of charity encompasses all dimensions of existence, all individuals, all areas of community life, and all peoples. Nothing human can be alien to it”

  Thursday December 10

Yesterday at a men's reception centre I spent quite a bit of time in a day room of more than 80 older  drug addicts, almost none of them in detention for the first time.

How to help them break their addiction? This is the same sort of question as on right: how can they be "unradicalised" from drugs?

Can be done ....has been done ... for many people ...by the power of a Baby whose birth we celebrate in a couple of weeks

Pope's letter on climate change:
Laudato Si
     我主應受讚美

150. Given the interrelationship between living space and human behaviour, those who design buildings, neighbourhoods, public spaces and cities, ought to draw on the various disciplines which help us to understand people’s thought processes, symbolic language and ways of acting.

It is not enough to seek the beauty of design. More precious still is the service we offer to another kind of beauty: people’s quality of life, their adaptation to the environment, encounter and mutual assistance.

Here too, we see how important it is that urban planning always take into consideration the views of those who will live in these areas.

1 Samuel 3

One day when the boy Samuel was serving in the temple, the Lord called to him "Samuel, Samuel."

The boy thought it was the old priest Eli calling to him so he ran to Eli and said "Here I am."

Eli replied "I did not call you."

Two more times the Lord called.
Both times the boy went to Eli.

Eli now realized it was the Lord calling Samuel. Eli told Samuel to say "Speak Lord, your servant is listening" the next time he heard the voice.

The Lord told Samuel that Eli's family would be punished for the bad things they had done.

The people quickly found out that the Lord was with Samuel and that Samuel was the Lord's prophet.

Dear Lord, please help me to listen to your voice - your voice in the Bible, in my conscience and in other people

Psalm 33

Ring out your joy to the Lord, all good people, for praise is fitting for loyal hearts.

For the Lord loves justice and right; he fills the earth with his love.

By his word the heavens were made, he spoke and the universe came into being.

They are happy, whose God is the Lord, he is the source of all true joy.

May your love be upon us, O Lord, since we place all our trust in you.

Lord, we trust in your precious love

Acts 24.1-26

When the religious leaders arrived, they put their case to Felix. They summed up their accusations by saying "The plain truth is that we find this man to be a perfect pest. He stirs up trouble among Jews everywhere, and is a ringleader of the Nazarene sect"

Paul replied "In regard to the Way, which they malign as a sect, I serve and worship the very same God worshipped by our ancestors. I live in hope that God will raise the dead. If that's my crime, my accusers are just as guilty as I am"

Felix postponed a decision. He met with Paul many  times, hoping  Paul would offer him a bribe

Luke 6.12-16

Jesus went to the hills to pray. He spent a whole night praying. In the morning he called all his disciples together. He chose 12 of them and called them "apostles":

Peter and his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon, Judas son of James - and Judas Iscariot who became a traitor

Jesus and the 12 came down from the hill to a place of level ground.
Gathered there were his many disciples and a large crowd of people from all over the country who had come to hear him and to be healed of diseases

People in the crowd tried to touch Jesus because power came out of him that cured everyone

181 (a):
The kingdom, already present and growing in our midst, engages us at every level of our being and reminds us of the principle of discernment which Pope Paul VI applied to true development: it must be directed to “all people and the whole person”

We know that “evangelization would not be complete if it did not take account of the unceasing interplay of the Gospel and of our concrete life, both personal and social”.

This is the principle of universality intrinsic to the Gospel, for the Father desires the salvation of every man and woman, and his saving plan consists in “gathering up all things in Christ, things in heaven and things on earth”.

Pope's letter on climate change:
Laudato Si
     我主應受讚美

149. The extreme poverty experienced in areas lacking harmony, open spaces or potential for integration, can lead to incidents of brutality and to exploitation by criminal organizations.

In the unstable neighbourhoods of mega-cities, the daily experience of overcrowding and social anonymity can create a sense of uprootedness which spawns antisocial behaviour and violence.

Nonetheless, I wish to insist that love always proves more powerful.

Many people in these conditions are able to weave bonds of belonging and togetherness which convert overcrowding into an experience of community in which the walls of the ego are torn down and the barriers of selfishness overcome. This experience of a communitarian salvation often generates creative ideas for the improvement of a building or a neighbourhood.[117]

1 Samuel 2
Hannah praised God for giving her a child: "My heart rejoices in the Lord. The Lord, our fortress, is holy. Don't speak proudly,
for the Lord knows what's in our hearts.

The Lord breaks the power of the strong. He gives strength and victory to the weak. He blesses the barren woman.

The Lord raises the poor from the dust, and gives them a seat of honor with princes.

The Lord guards the steps of good people, but scatters bad people in their pride."

The Lord blessed Hannah and she gave birth to three more sons and two daughters.

Her son Samuel grew up in the temple. The temple priest at that time was Eli.

But Eli's sons were bad men. They stole the people's offerings to the Lord.

Dear God, please bless good people like Hannah, and please help bad people like Eli's sons to stop being bad

Psalm 32

Happy is the person whose sin is forgiven.

For a while I refused to ask for forgiveness, and my body paid the penalty. But then I said "Lord, forgive me" and my spirit and body revived.

Lord, when I do wrong, please give me the grace to say sorry and ask forgiveness

As IS continues to cause chaos and suffering in our world, many people are asking "what can we do?"

One thing we can do is strengthen our defences, not just physical but spiritual defences, because there is a link between IS and the powers of darkness.

St Paul tells us to overcome evil with good. We need to increase our goodness.

One way of increasing our goodness and strengthening our spiritual defences is to make a commitment to reading the Bible each day.

Bible reading "radicalizes" us for good, just as the IS recruits have been "radicalised" for evil.

Radicalised Christians become sources of compassion and reconciliation and mercy in our world ...breaking down the walls of hatred being built by IS

As in this 8 minute video:
The story of Kamal Saleem

Acts 23.12-22

The next day about 40 Jews held a meeting. They decided not to eat or drink until they had killed Paul.

They asked the religious leaders to arrange another meeting so that they could attack Paul

But the son of Paul's sister heard of the plot. He got into the barracks and told Paul. Paul got the boy to tell the captain.

The captain immediately arranged for a large group of soldiers to take Paul to Caesarea to be tried by Felix the governor

Felix said "I will wait till your accusers come here too, then I will hear your case"

Luke 6.6-11

On another Sabbath Jesus  visited a prayer hall. A man with a withered hand was in the prayer hall

Some religious leaders were watching to see if Jesus would heal the man (since no work was allowed on the Sabbath, and they regarded healing as work)

Jesus knew what they were thinking,  so he said to the man with the withered hand "Stand up! Come out into the middle of the hall". He came out and stood there

Jesus then asked the leaders "Is it against the law on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil; to save life or to destroy it?"

Then he said to the man with the withered hand "Stretch out your hand". He stretched it out. It was healed.

The leaders were very angry. They left the prayer hall and began plotting how to get rid of Jesus

Jesus, please stop bad religious leaders from misleading people

If ever there was need to be merciful

One powerful symbol of the start of the Holy Year of Jubilee, is the opening of a door, the way in, where crossing the threshold from the street, access is made to share in the hospitality of the house. To shut a door in someone’s face is an unfriendly, hostile action that makes very clear our intention of not wishing to talk or listen.

Mercy, Vatican II comes alive!

Pope Francis calls Vatican II a "new phase" of the Church's history. It is one where the Church is more fully immersed in the world, in dialogue with its people and the channel of God's mercy towards sinners, the poor, the weak and the marginalized.

For more than a year I have been clicking "Not now ...later" when Windows 8.1 has tried to install itself on my computer (..because when it did so on a previous occasion, I realised it was incompatible with my printer and other programs ...and I had to uninstall it with great difficulty).  But last night it got under my guard and started installing itself...and got up to 82% installed...when "necessity became the mother of invention": I turned off the computer, and when I turned it back on, up came the message "installation was not successful. Your previous version will now be recovered". Alleluia!

Reading the Scriptures also makes it clear that the Gospel is not merely about our personal relationship with God. Nor should our loving response to God be seen simply as an accumulation of small personal gestures to individuals in need, a kind of “charity à la carte”, or a series of acts aimed solely at easing our conscience.

The Gospel is about the kingdom of God ; it is about loving God who reigns in our world. To the extent that he reigns within us, the life of society will be a setting for universal fraternity, justice, peace and dignity.

Both Christian preaching and life, then, are meant to have an impact on society. We are seeking God’s kingdom: “Seek first God’s kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well”.

Jesus’ mission is to inaugurate the kingdom of his Father; he commands his disciples to proclaim the good news that “the kingdom of heaven is at hand”.

Pope's letter on climate change:
Laudato Si

148. An admirable creativity and generosity is shown by persons and groups who respond to environmental limitations by alleviating the adverse effects of their surroundings and learning to orient their lives amid disorder and uncertainty.

For example, in some places, where the façades of buildings are derelict, people show great care for the interior of their homes, or find contentment in the kindness and friendliness of others. A wholesome social life can light up a seemingly undesirable environment. At times a commendable human ecology is practised by the poor despite numerous hardships.

The feeling of asphyxiation brought on by densely populated residential areas is countered if close and warm relationships develop, if communities are created, if the limitations of the environment are compensated for in the interior of each person who feels held within a network of solidarity and belonging. In this way, any place can turn from being a hell on earth into the setting for a dignified life.

The Immaculate Conception

The immaculate conception of Mary refers to her mother's conception of her, not her conception of Jesus (the virgin birth of Jesus)

Today's feast reminds us that it is possible to defeat evil - e.g. the evil of drugs.  Drug taking can be stopped. Many people have come off drugs by community support and prayer

Genesis 3:

A creature hostile to God took the form of a snake and tempted the first man and first woman. The snake tempted them to disobey God.

When God asked them why they disobeyed him, the man blamed the woman, and the woman blamed the snake.

God said to the snake: "You are the enemy of the human race.
Someday a member of the human race will defeat you."

God said to the man and woman:
"From dust you came  and to dust you will return."

The first man's name was Adam (meaning "man"). The first woman's name was Eve (meaning "life").

The angel said to her "Mary, Rejoice! You have been greatly blessed by God.  You are to conceive and have a son whom you must name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of God"

Mary said to the angel, "How can this happen since I am a virgin?"

The angel replied "The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will specially bless you. Know this too: your cousin Elizabeth has, in her old age, conceived a son, and is now in her sixth  month"

"I am the handmaid of the Lord", said Mary, "let what you have said, be done for me".  And the angel left her

Pope  Francis: The Joy of the Gospel             Full text

179 (b): God’s word teaches that our brothers and sisters are the prolongation of the incarnation for each of us: “As you did it to one of these, the least of my brethren, you did it to me”. The way we treat others has a transcendent dimension: “The measure you give will be the measure you get”.

It corresponds to the mercy which God has shown us: “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. Do not judge, and you will not be judged; do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven; give, and it will be given to you… For the measure you give will be the measure you get back”.

What these passages make clear is the absolute priority of “going forth from ourselves towards our brothers and sisters” as one of the two great commandments which ground every moral norm and as the clearest sign for discerning spiritual growth in response to God’s completely free gift.

For this reason, “the service of charity is also a constituent element of the Church’s mission and an indispensable expression of her very being”.  By her very nature the Church is missionary; she abounds in effective charity and a compassion which understands, assists and promotes.
