Good News: a Filipina domestic helper, Cecilia, who was forced by her employer to work illegally in the employer's office ....and thrice taken by employer to Germany to be a virtual slave in locked-up conditions....was arrested and imprisoned last year for working illegally. Allowed bail, she has been living at the Mercy Centre on Cheung Chau Island for the past few months. Her employer was taken to court by the Labor Department, but enlisted a top lawyer and beat the charge last week. Yesterday was Cecilia's turn in court, and Thank Goodness, she was given a suspended sentence of two years and is now free.

Song of Songs 8: Set me like a seal on your heart,
like a seal on your arm. For love is strong as death.
Love is like a fire, a mighty flame. No flood can quench love.
No torrents can drown it. Money cannot buy love.
Lord, please fill my heart with
your love
My
recording of this reading
Psalm
90: O Lord you have been our refuge from one generation to the next.
Before the earth or the world
existed,
you are God, without beginning or end. For you, a thousand years are
like yesterday, come and gone so quickly. We humans have a short life,
our life is over like a sigh. Our span is 70 years,
or 80 for those who are strong. Make us know the shortness of our
life,
that we may gain wisdom of heart. In the morning, fill us with your
love.
Give success to the work of our hands.
Lord,
help us realize the shortness of our life, that we may live our lives more wisely

Revelation
19.1-9: After this I heard the sound of a huge crowd
in heaven singing: "Alleluia! Victory and glory and power to our
God!" The sound of the crowd was like the
sound of the ocean
or the roar of thunder as they called out: "Alleluia! The reign of the Lord our God
the Almighty has begun.
Let us be glad and joyful, and give praise to God,
because this is the time for the marriage of the Lamb". And an angel said "Blessed are those who
are invited to the wedding feast of the Lamb".
Jesus, even on this earth, may I start to hear
the sounds of heaven

Mark
14.53-65:
The men who arrested Jesus took
him to a meeting of the religious leaders. The leaders wanted to condemn
Jesus to death,
even if they had to use false evidence. Jesus remained silent before
their accusations.
Then the main leader challenged Jesus:
"Are you the Saviour, the Son of God?" Jesus replied "I am".
The leader then called out
"We have heard him claim to be of
Divine origin. This is blasphemy". The rest of the leaders shouted
"He should die". Then they spat in Jesus' face and hit him with their fists.
Jesus, thank you for submitting
yourself to insult and spittle
for the salvation of the world

Very cold in HK these days ....with government shelters open for street sleepers...the largest shelter in HK being the one not far from my home...providing an evening meal and breakfast as well as overnight accommodation. Guests need to check out after breakfast....may return in the evening.
My yesterday, between morning Mass and evening function for the poor - both at St Paul's Yau Ma Tei - was spent at home working on photos from South America ...of families of prison inmates in HK ....about 700 photos to be sorted, have numbers put on them, put in addressed envelopes to be sent to prisoners. Hope to have this job finished by the end of the week.

Song of Songs 5-7:
The bride:
His conversation is sweetness itself,
my beloved is totally lovable.
I am my beloved's, and my beloved is mine.
The groom:
You are beautiful, my love,
as beautiful as Jerusalem. How beautiful are your feet and thighs.
The curve of your thighs is like the curve of a necklace. Your navel is like an exquisite wine glass.
Your belly is like a heap of wheat. Your two breasts are like two baby deer.
Your neck is like an ivory tower. Your eyes are like beautiful water pools.
Your nose is like a majestic tower.
How beautiful you are, how charming,
my love, my delight.
Lord, please help me understand

Psalm
89: I will sing for ever of your love, O Lord.
Of this I am sure, that your love lasts for ever.

Mark
14.43-52: While Jesus was still speaking, Judas arrived.
Judas had with him a large crowd of men with swords and clubs,
sent by the religious leaders. Judas had told these men
"The one I kiss is the man. Take him".
So Judas went to Jesus and said "Teacher" and kissed
him.
The men then seized Jesus.
Jesus said to them "Am I a robber that you needed to capture me
with swords and clubs? Day after day I was openly teaching in the
Temple".
All the apostles then deserted him and ran away.
Jesus, when I am being
treated unfairly by other people,
please give me strength

c.f. readings for Sunday 5
Job 3-7: Job broke the 7 day silence by wishing that
he had never been
born. He added "For me, there is no peace, no sleep. My
suffering doesn't let me rest." Eliphaz then spoke and reminded Job that God
corrects those whom he loves. Job replied that he was innocent of any
wrongdoing, so why was he being punished? He added: "Lying in
bed I wonder 'When will it be day?' During the day I think 'How
slowly night comes.'
Neither day nor night offers me any relief from my suffering."
Dear Lord, please give courage
and peace
to people who are suffering great pain or distress
My
recording of this reading
Psalm
147: Praise the Lord for he is good.
Sing to our God for he is loving. To him our praise is due. The Lord builds up Jerusalem
and brings back Israel's exiles. He heals the broken-hearted
and binds up all their wounds. The Lord raises the lowly
and humbles the wicked. He fixes the number of the stars.
He calls each one by name. Our Lord is great and almighty.
His wisdom can never be measured. He covers the heavens with clouds.
He prepares rain for the earth, making mountains sprout with grass
and with plants to serve our needs. His delight is not in horses
nor his pleasure in warriors' strength. The Lord delights in those who love and honor
him,
in those who wait for his love.
It is right and fitting to
praise and love you, Lord our Creator

Therefore I try to stay in top condition, avoiding sloppy living.

Jesus.
He healed many who were suffering from all kinds of diseases.
He also cast out many devils.

During my recent trip to South America I met in eight different countries with the families of more than 40 inmates in prison in HK. Yesterday I spent the whole day processing messages, photos and other items from the families ....putting them in envelopes....and got them to the post office before 6pm closing time. Every photo, every item needed to have the inmate's number written in black.
For most people, letters have largely been replaced by email and social media these days ...but not for inmates....no internet in prison. So ...a letter from home is something to be treasured.
Families can of course write directly to inmates...but many don't write....they communicate only by the short monthly phone call from each inmate.

I have reached the end of my strength. Will your love be told in the grave?

Revelation
15.1-4:
Then I saw something great and wonderful:
those who had fought against the beast and won, were singing the Song of

Mark
14.26-42: After the meal, Jesus said to his apostles
"Tonight all of you will desert me".
Peter said "I will never desert you".
Jesus replied "Tonight before the rooster crows,
you will deny me three times". They came to a place with olive
trees called Gethsemane.
Jesus asked Peter, James and John to pray with him. Jesus was overcome with sadness
and fear.
He said to them "Sadness is filling my heart, as if my heart is
dying.
Please support me as I pray". Then he fell on his face and
prayed for about an hour:
"Father, don't let this suffering continue. But your will be
done". He stood up and found that the
apostles were asleep.
He said to them "Couldn't you stay awake one hour to support
me?" Three times he prayed the same way.
Three times the apostles went to sleep. Then he said "Get ready. The one who is betraying me is coming"
Jesus, please help me give more

Cruel Hong Kong - a true story: Bilel and his wife Juniarti (real names) with their 20 month baby girl came to HK in May last year for a holiday. While Bilel was praying in Kowloon Mosque, his passport was stolen. This began a horror story whereby Immigration officers, police and duty lawyers combined to inflict a great injustice on this dear family. A great shame to Hong Kong. Having been granted bail - thanks to the kindness of a High Court judge - the family is now at our Mercy Centre on Cheung Chau Island, due to face trial on February 7 ...back in the wild west of Eastern Court. Readings for Feast of Presentation
Malachi 3.1-2: The
Lord God says this: Look, I am going to send my messenger to prepare a way
before me. And the Lord you are seeking will suddenly enter his Temple.
Jesus presented in the Temple on this day, we praise
you Lord
My
recording of this reading
Psalms 24-26: The
Lord's is the earth and all its peoples. It is the Lord who is Creator of
the universe. May all hearts open their doors to the Lord.
Let him enter, the king of glory. Lord I hope in
you all the day long. Forgive my sins and help me walk in your truth.
God my savior, teach me your way of truth
Recording
Hebrews 2.14-18: The
Son did not become an angel. He became a man, so that he could die for us. By
his death he took away the power of the devil. He himself experienced
temptation. He is able to help us when we are tempted.
Jesus, please help me when I am tempted to do something wrong
Recording
Luke 2.22-32: When
Jesus was 40 days old, his parents took him to the Temple in Jerusalem to
present him to the Lord, as the Law required. In Jerusalem there was an old man
named Simeon. The Holy Spirit had revealed to him that before he died, he
would see the Christ of the Lord. Prompted by the Spirit, he came to the Temple,
took Jesus in his arms and praised God, saying "Now, Master, you can let
your servant go in peace, for my eyes have seen the Savior. He is a light to
enlighten the pagans, and he is the glory of your people Israel".
Jesus, true Light of the world, we praise you
Lord

Reflection
on the above Bible readings:
Simeon in Luke's Gospel and the three wise men in Matthew's Gospel have the same
message: the Baby born in
the stable is the Saviour of not just Israel but of the whole world. May all
places, all hearts open their doors to him

14.17-25:
On Passover Eve, Jesus ate a last meal with his apostles.

14.1-11: Two days before the Passover festival,
the religious leaders kept looking for a way to arrest Jesus and have him
put to death. During these days Jesus had a
meal at the home of Simon the leper.
At the meal, a woman put expensive burial oil on Jesus' head.
The woman understood that Jesus was soon to die. One of Jesus' 12 apostles, Judas
Iscariot, went to the religious leaders and offered to help them arrest
Jesus at a convenient time.
The leaders promised to give Judas money.
Judas looked for an opportunity to arrange the arrest

Monday Jan 29: This morning I tried to make a start on a host of jobs related to my South America trip ....and am tonight attending an overnight O.M.I. meeting....during which I received an urgent request for a support letter for an African asylum seeker due to make an appeal at the High Court tomorrow morning for bail (...I emailed letter to kind friend who will take it to court in morning).
One person's letter/help/work can make a difference between detention and freedom for someone else. Last night on my way to the gathering for the poor I met two local Chinese people released a week ago after being in prison for three months on a charge that was dismissed by their court. They had the financial resources to hire a good lawyer ...and won their case. We can help others...it is possible to make a difference for someone else.
Churches face new threats as state religious code is revised... (one on the ground example of this in practice: some printing shops now refusing to do jobs for religious groups)

Sunday Jan 28: It's
good to be back in HK, although jets-lag
is going to take a while to recover from....21 flights in 33 days. But if it
means fewer people from South America going to prison in HK, then it's been
worth it.
Tonight at the usual Sunday gathering for the poor at St Paul's Yau Ma Tei,
another kind group joined our joint venture: Feeding
Hong Kong. HK is blessed to have groups like this. Please God places like
Sao Paulo (20,000 people living on the street) will have an increase of such
groups as soon as possible.
60 years ago today I was in this photo (...kneeling at far right). God bless Iona!

Saturday night, January 27, Hong Kong: arrived back safely around 7pm HK time. Thank you Lord for all the blessings of the past month. Please bless all the inmates from Latin America, their families, the media people trying to stop others going to prison, everyone I met over the past month.....with a special blessing for the kind people who helped arrange the trip, prayed for me....and particularly those whose donations made the trip possible. God bless everyone!

Frightening YouTube reports: LGBT radical impact on educational institutions (No. 5); LGBT infiltrating churches (No. 6); US corporations massively supporting LGBT agenda (No. 7). What has happened in the US is now starting to happen in other places. Some day our children will ask "why didn't you do more to stop this evil?"
