108:   Based on the Vatican II document
Gaudium et Spes (Church in the world)
Article 4

"The Church has the duty of scrutinizing the signs of the times
and of interpreting them in the light of the Gospel.
In language intelligible to each generation,
she can respond to the perennial questions which humanity asks
about this present life and the life to come,
and about the relationship of people one to the other.
We must therefore recognize and understand the world in which we live,
its explanations, its longings, and its often dramatic characteristics"

Not facing up to the signs of the times is bad for business:
- c.f. USA car manufacturers...years ago...writing was on wall for huge cars, consuming so much fuel...
but middle and upper management didn't read, or didn't face up to the signs of the times,
....and were left for dead in the market by Japanese small car manufacturers

Today's signs of the times which the Catholic Church should have near top of radar:
- world poverty
- climate change
- justice and peace issues
- Ecumenical issues
- the need for the Church to serve our troubled world, not retreat from it

Jesus, please help your Church to read and face up to
the signs of the times
