Pollution doco goes viral in China

Chai Jing reported on China's environment. When she found her daughter had grown a tumour in her womb, things became personal.

Under The Dome notches up 100m views for Chai Jing, who tells of her concerns about the effect of country’s filthy air on her child

Will new film finally push China to take action on pollution?

One of the biggest Tanzanian drug lords is a guy called Kiboko. Full name (one of many he uses): Ayubu Mfaume Kiboko. More than 50 Tanzanians are serving long sentences in HK prisons because of Kiboko.

Tanzanian authorities can't arrest him - he has too much protection from people in high places. But he's currently in Guangzhou. I hope he is not arrested in China (because of death penalty). But I hope he is arrested in HK or Macau as he exits China. He has destroyed thousands of lives - in Africa, in China and in Hong Kong

Isaiah 62-66 (final reading from Isaiah)

The Lord says: "My eyes are drawn to the humble and contrite person who lovingly meditates on my word.

Towards Jerusalem I will send peace, flowing like a river.

I am going to gather the nations of every language. All peoples will know and love me

Lord, please give me more love for the Bible.  Please give the world more peace. Please help all peoples know and love you

Psalm 51

Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness, and cleanse me of my sin.

My offences truly I know them.
What is evil in your sight I have done.

But in my defence please don't forget that sinfulness is part of the human condition, part of our DNA.

A pure heart create for me, O God.
Put a steadfast spirit within me.

Give me again the joy of your help. With a spirit of fervor sustain me.

Lord,  you will not spurn a humbled, contrite heart

Philippians 3.20 - 4.1

Our homeland is in heaven. We wait for the Savior from heaven who will transfigure these wretched bodies of ours into copies of his glorious body

He will do this by the same power he has as C.E.O. of the universe

So, do not stop running but remain faithful in the Lord

Jesus, please increase my longing for heaven

 Luke 14.7-11

At the leader's house, Jesus noticed how the guests picked the places of honor

He said to them "When someone invites you to a meal, do not choose a seat of honor. Rather, when you are a guest, make your way to the lowest place and sit there. Maybe your host will ask you to move to a seat of honor

Everyone who exalts himself, will be humbled. Whoever humbles himself, will be exalted"

Jesus, please help me  choose the lowest place

Isaiah 61

The spirit of the Lord has been given to me, for the Lord has anointed me.

He has sent me to bring good news to the poor, to bind up broken hearts, to proclaim liberty to captives, freedom to those in prison, to comfort people who mourn, to replace their sadness with praise.

I exult for joy in the Lord, my soul rejoices in my God, for as the earth makes plants to grow, and as a garden makes seeds spring up, so the Lord will make integrity and praise spring up in the sight of the nations.

Lord, please give comfort and courage to people who are sad

My recording of this reading

Psalms 49-50

I will turn my mind to a parable,
with the harp I will solve a problem.

The problem is: why do bad people prosper and succeed?

The answer: at the end of their lives bad people will have to face death and judgement, just like everyone else.

When we are rich, we often lack wisdom. Wealth blinds our minds and hearts.

Let's not forgot God and his laws.
Let's try to be good and lead good lives

Lord, please help me understand the meaning of life

Philippians 3.12-14

I am not yet perfect. I have not yet won the race. But I am still running, trying to capture the prize for which Christ Jesus captured me

I forget the past, and strain ahead for what is still to come.

I am racing for the finish, for the prize to which God calls us to receive in Christ Jesus

Jesus, please help me keep running each day!

Luke 14.1-6

One Sabbath day Jesus went for a meal to the house of a religious leader. In the house Jesus saw a man with dropsy

Jesus asked the leaders present there "Is it against the Law to cure a man on the Sabbath?" But they remained silent

Jesus took the man, healed him, and sent him away.

Then Jesus said to the leaders "Which of you here, if his son falls into a well, will not pull him out on a Sabbath day?" Again  the leaders remained silent

Jesus, help me understand that "the Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath"

Lent joke:

It is the third Friday of Lent, and the faithful parishioner stumbles through pouring rain past hamburger huts and steak houses into the monastery at Mount Angel and requests shelter. He's just in time for dinner and is treated to the best fish and chips he's ever had.

After dinner, he goes into the kitchen to thank the chefs. He's met by two brothers, "Hello, I'm Brother Michael, and this is Brother Francis."

"I'm very pleased to meet you. I just wanted to thank you for a wonderful dinner. The fish and chips were the best I've ever tasted. Out of curiosity, who cooked what?"

Brother Michael replies, "Well, I'm the fish friar."
The man turns to the other brother and says, "Then you must be . . ."
"Yes, I'm afraid I'm the chip monk."

Triple Play

In baseball, a triple play is rare. It occurs when the team in the field can eliminate three opponents in one play, and that team wins the inning. They may not win the game, but it certainly helps.

c.f. Readings for "Lent 2"

Genesis 22

Abraham loved God very dearly.

Once when God put him to the test, Abraham was even willing to sacrifice his only son Isaac if that was what God wanted.

When God saw Abraham's love and obedience, God renewed his promise to make Abraham and Isaac's descendants as many as the stars of heaven

Dear God, please help us love and obey you

My recording of this reading

Psalm 116

I love the Lord for he has heard the cry of my appeal. He turned his ear to me in the day when I called him.

They surrounded me, sorrow, distress and the snares of death.
I was helpless, so the Lord saved me.

Calm down my soul, for the Lord has been good. I will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living.

How can I repay the Lord for his goodness to me? The cup of salvation I will raise to thank the Lord.

O precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his faithful. Lord, you have loosened my bonds. I am your servant.

Thank you, Lord, for all your goodness to me

Transfiguration (YouTube)

Mark 9.2-10

One day Jesus took his disciples Peter, James and John up a high mountain.

On the mountain Jesus' whole appearance changed. His face shone like the sun. His clothes were as white as snow.

Moses and Elijah appeared and spoke with him. Peter said to Jesus "Lord, how good it is for us to be here!"

Then a bright cloud covered them with its shadow. From the cloud came a voice: "This is my Son, the Beloved. Listen to him."

The disciples bowed to the ground. When they got up, they saw only Jesus in his normal appearance.

Jesus, how good it is to spend time with you

Islam

What Is the Koran?

Researchers with a variety of academic and theological interests are proposing controversial theories about the Koran and Islamic history, and are striving to reinterpret Islam for the modern world. This is, as one scholar puts it, a "sensitive business"

To go with today's Gospel of the Transfiguration:
A  missionary on a study trip to the Holy Land was visiting Jaffa (Joppa) where Peter was residing when he baptized Cornelius (Acts 10). The breath-taking beauty of this small seaside town was such that it inspired him to come up with this joke:

At the transfiguration Peter offered to build three tents, one for Jesus, one for Moses and one for Elijah. Jesus said, "And what about you, Peter?" And Peter replies, "Don't worry about me Lord, I have a better place in Jaffa."

Pope Francis arranges for homeless man to be buried in the Vatican

To mark his birthday in December, Francis ordered the distribution of dozens of sleeping bags to homeless people across Rome, and parishes in the Italian capital have been asked to follow suit with similar initiatives

Yesterday I was very sad and disappointed to meet two new inmates from Tanzania, two of four recently arrested at HK airport for drug trafficking. One of the two yesterday told me how he had heard my Clouds Media radio interview last month in Dar Es Salaam ....but he still took the risk of bringing drugs to HK in order to get urgently needed money for his family. Isaiah 59-60

Arise, shine out, for your light has come. The glory of the Lord is rising on you, though the rest of the world is still in darkness.

The nations come to your light
and kings to your dawning brightness.

People from other lands are coming to you, bringing gold and incense, and singing the praise of the Lord.

No more will the sun give you daylight, nor moonlight shine on you, for the Lord himself will be your everlasting light. Then your days of mourning will be ended.

Lord Jesus, you are the light of the world. Please give more light to my life.

My recording of this reading

Psalms 47-48

All peoples, clap your hands, cry to God with shouts of joy. For the Lord, our Creator, we must love and honor, great king over all the earth.

Especially in his holy city is the Lord worthy to be praised. Praise is fitting in Mount Sion, our earth's most sacred site.

O God, as we pray in your temple,
our hearts meditate on your love.

May peoples and rulers everywhere acknowledge and love you as Creator of the Universe

Let all the peoples praise you, Lord. Let all the peoples praise you

Philippians 3.7-11

Because of Christ, I have come to consider all my former advantages as a scholar as disadvantages

Nothing is more important than knowing Christ Jesus my Lord

For him I have accepted the loss of everything, and I look on everything as so much rubbish if only I can have Christ

All I want is to know Christ and the power of his resurrection. I want to share his sufferings by carrying the Cross with him

This is the way I can hope to receive eternal life

Christ Jesus my Lord, knowing you is No. 1

chickens under her wings, and you refused"

Jesus, may your kingdom grow in the hearts of more and more people

Isaiah 57-58

Tell my people their faults, tell the House of Jacob its sins.

Tell them that their fasting is a sham. Fasting and injustice cannot go together.

This is the sort of fast that pleases the Lord: breaking unjust fetters,
sharing your bread with the hungry, sheltering and clothing the homeless poor.

Do this and you will find healing and peace. Do this and the Lord will give strength to your bones.

Lord, please help me do more to help poor people

Psalm 45

God is for us a refuge and strength, in time of distress he is a helper close at hand.

Therefore we shall not fear even though the earth should rock,
even though the mountains fall into the sea.

The Lord of hosts is with us. The God of Jacob is our stronghold.

Come and consider the works of the Lord, and always remember his words: "Be still and know that I am God".

Photos/reports of my trip to Tanzania/Malawi Dec-Jan

Today is a day of prayer, and a school holiday in the Philippines
 - remembering 1986 People Power revolution

"As the nation continues to grieve over the tragedy in Mamasapano and the family of nations is threatened by war and terror from extremist groups, our best contribution to the nation and to the world is to encourage people to pray," Villegas said.

There are several Tanzanian inmates in HK who have had babies since their arrest for drug trafficking. The women had been tricked into swallowing dozens of drug capsules when six months pregnant, in the false hope that they would avoid x-ray detection.

While in Tanzania last month, I met the mother of one of those inmates. The mother asked for help to get some photos of her grandson.
Well, thanks to Fr Franco Mella who has access to the baby (now temporarily in a HK orphanage), the grandmother yesterday saw nine  photos - after I emailed them to Grace (the Dar Es Salaam social worker keeping contact with the families I visited) and Grace sent them to the grandmother by Whatsup.

Isaiah 54-55

Though the mountains may fall and the hills turn to dust, the love of the Lord will never cease.

O come to the water, all you are thirsty, though you have no money, come.

Why spend your money on what is useless, your wages on what fails to satisfy?

Seek the Lord while he is to be found. Call to him while he is near.

Lord,  please help us give more time to things that are important
....and less time to things that are not so important.

Psalm 41

Blessed the person who helps the poor and the weak. He himself will be helped by the Lord when he is sick and in trouble.

The Lord will help him on his bed of pain. The Lord will bring him back from sickness to health.

Lord, please help me to do more for the poor

Song based on today's reading from Isaiah:
 Though the mountains may fall

Philppians 1.27 - 2.4

Avoid anything in your everyday lives that would be unworthy of the Good News of Christ

Be united in your convictions, and united in your love. There must be no competition among you, no conceit

Everyone should be self-effacing.
Always regard others as better than yourself

Put others interests before your own

Jesus, help me say "no" to anything unworthy of your Good News

Luke 12.22-34

Jesus said to his disciples "Do not worry about food and clothing

As regards food, think of  the birds. They don't sow or reap, and they have no homes to store things. Yet God feeds them

As regards clothing, think how the flowers grow with a beauty greater than that of Solomon's clothes. God will look after you more than he looks after the flowers

So, don't set your hearts on food and clothing. Don't go in for worry. Just set your hearts on God's kingdom, then food and clothing will not be a problem

Where your treasure is, that is where your heart will be too

Jesus, please help me to put your friendship as number one in my life

Many thanks to two kind HK readers who have responded to my appeal for help in funding African inmates' study at the Open University of HK. Final cost for 4 inmates was 5075 + 5075 + 4700 + 4700 = HK$19,550.  Donations received = HK$9,500

Isaiah 53

And yet ours were the sufferings he bore, ours the sorrows he carried.

He was pierced through for our faults, crushed for our sins.

On him lies a punishment that brings us peace, and through his wounds we are healed.

We had all gone astray like sheep,
and the Lord burdened him with our sins.

Harshly dealt with, he bore it humbly, never opening his mouth.

He let himself be taken for a sinner, and all the time he was suffering and praying for sinners.

Jesus, these words refer to you.
Thank you for all you suffered to redeem the world.

Psalm 40

I waited, I waited for the Lord and he stooped down to me. He heard my cry.

He saved me from distress. He put fresh hope into my heart.

How many, O Lord my God, are the times you have helped me. They are too many for me to describe.

My God, in the depth of my heart I delight in your law. You do not want external offerings. You want my heart.

Lord, I offer you my heart, my love. You deserve all my love

Philippians 1.13-25

My chains have become famous and have given courage to many other believers. Many others are now becoming more daring in announcing the Message without fear

I hope and trust that I will always have courage for Christ to be glorified in my body, whether by my life or by my death

My heart wants to go two ways. One part wants to depart this world  and live for ever with Christ in heaven. The other part wants to stay in this world to help more people to know the Lord

Jesus, give me courage in spreading the Good News

Recording

Recommended: check these readings early morning, think about them during the day, check them again at night. This habit gives us extra energy, courage, motivation, peace and compassion for each day

 Luke 12.15-21

Jesus told the people this story: There was a rich man who, having had a good harvest from his land, thought to himself "What am I to do? I don't have enough room to store my crops".

Then he said to himself "This is what I will do: I will pull down my barns and build bigger ones, and store all my grain in them, and I will say to my soul: My soul, you have plenty of good things laid by for many years to come; take things easy, eat, drink, and have a good time"

But God said to him "Fool! This very night your earthly life will come to an end. And all your possessions, who will get them?"

So it is when people store up treasure for themselves, instead of making themselves rich in the sight of God

Jesus, please help me to be satisfied with what I have, and not to be greedy

c.f. Matteo Ricci one step closer to sainthood - Vatican Insider

Pages 424 to 479  show how the Russian declaration of war on Japan, and immediate invasion of Manchuria, had more effect on the decision making of the Japanese leaders, especially the military leaders, than the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Also described:
- the crucial role of the Emperor in forcing the military leaders to agree to unconditional surrender.
- when the Emperor recorded a radio broadcast announcing the surrender, it was the first time the people had ever heard his voice.   People weren't supposed to hear "the voice of god".
- US denial about deaths caused by radiation

An excellent book to read for the 70th anniversaries in August this year
